Why I’m Doing Away With Setting Goals

For most of this year, I’ve been exhausted by the whole ‘self-help’ movement. I feel like a lot of us have been communicating the same messages about having high self-esteem and be yourself, and confidence is key and YOU CAN DO IT! and blah blah blah and I guess there are still people out there that need this type of positive reinforcement, especially the generation behind me; but I wonder how much is it really helping people?

The first time this feeling struck me was in 2012; I saw Oprah giving a quick red carpet interview and one of her messages was ‘just be yourself’. Of course we have heard Oprah and how many other people give this advice before, but for the first time I thought to myself: “If I am still growing and maturing (at any age) how can I know myself enough to be myself?” And ever since then, I’ve written off that piece of advice and promised not to say it to another soul…although I’m sure I already have without even realizing it.

Anyway, so what this all has to do with getting rid of setting goals is that some of us set goals based on what we want to see or achieve in our lives, but I believe we would do much better to think about how we want to feel in our lives.

@MarieForleo recently did an interview with @DanielleLaporte that totally aligned with my thoughts about doing something different and revolutionary to live the lives we desire, instead of the same old affirmations and positive reinforcements and self-help mumbo jumbo.

I apologize if I’m offending anybody, but if you are offended, I want to challenge you think of the journey to your growth a little differently and maybe take a different approach or a different perspective on how to achieve and live the life you desire.

After you see this video, you will totally understand what I’m talking about and then you will either agree or disagree, but if you have been setting and trying to reach goals all your life with little to no progress, then it’s time to switch things up!
